CHICAGO LODGE #437 WAS CHARTERED ON OCTOBER 5, 1865. ON APRIL 16,1965 THE LODGE CELEBRATED IT'S CENTENIAL.

AS PART OF THAT CELEBRATION, CHICAGO LODGE PUBLISHED A BOOKLET EXPLAINING THE BACKGROUND OF THE LODGE.

FOLLOWING IS THE BOOKLET ITSELF, AS IT WAS PUBLISHED.

IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT CHICAGO LODGE WAS FORMED DURING THE CIVIL WAR AS A RESULT OF A DISPUTE BETWEEN MEMBERS OF LAFAYETTE LODGE NO. 18 ON THE ISSUE OF SLAVERY. ALTHOUGH THE CITY OF CHICAGO IS A NORTHERN CITY, A MAJORITY OF THE MEMBERS OF LAFAYETTE LODGE SYMPATHIZED WITH THE SOUTH. SIXTY FIVE MEMBERS OF THE MINORITY, LOYAL TO THE UNION, SPLIT AWAY FROM LAFAYETTE LODGE AND FORMED CHICAGO LODGE #437.
